Personal Narrative
The Record
I am in 8thgrade at Somerset Middle
School and today I find out that the 8thgraders are
going to be allowed to play for the Somerset
High School’s Junior
Varsity Ice Hockey team. Not that
long ago I was watching all my friends play for this team and now is my chance.
Last season, my friend Chris Padula scored an astounding 13 goals in a mere 6
games. That is averaging more
than 2 goals a game. A month later, I already had 5 games and I have scored 11
goals. That means in my 6th game I will need to score 2 goals. I just
packed my bag and got into the car and now I’m on my way to the 6th
game of the season and my last chance to break my teammate’s record. It is now
time to go on the ice and I have only one thing on my mind, one goal, my mind
is set to scoring 3 goals and beat the record. Game Time…the game has begun and
here’s my last chance. Halfway through the game I have only scored goal, and
have 1 period remaining to score two goals. “I can do this” I would say to
myself. With about 10 minutes left I score and now tie the record. However, I am
not satisfied, my goal was to beat it and now I have to fight and push and not
give up. I will achieve my goal. I have 2 minutes left to score this goal and I
am on the ice. My cousin, Ryan, also on the ice but as a defensemen. I see him
get the puck behind our own net, so I start skating as hard as I can up the ice.
He sees me and banks a rocket pass of the boards. The puck hits directly to my
stick and now I am 1 on 1 with a defenseman. I have a lot of momentum and I am
skating fast, so I try to beat the defenseman to the outside. As I beat him and
head to the net on a breakaway, the other defensemen comes and takes the puck
off my stick. I then skate to the bench with about a minute and a half left in
the game. I quickly sit down and drink some water. My coach knows I am on the
verge of beating this record. So he tells me to get back on the ice. I am on
the ice with just about 45 seconds left in this game and we are on a power play.
My friend Justin cycles the puck to me and knowing I don’t have a very good shot
attempt I pass it. As soon as I pass it I see a lane break open. I then skated
as hard as I could to the net, the kid I passed it to takes a shot and then I
score on the rebound because I went to the net. I can’t believe it, my
14thgoal and at that point I had broken the record. I was so excited
for this moment. It was one of my biggest accomplishments in hockey. As a hockey
legend used to say “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey
player plays where the puck is going to be.” That is a quote spoken by Wayne
Gretzy, the greatest hockey player to ever live. That is exactly what I did and
it worked. This man is a role model to me and I believe helped me accomplish
this and beat the record. Beating
the record was such a great feeling and this will be something I will remember
forever.

Odysseus the Great
In English class during term 2 we spent most of our time writing about and reading books of the Odyssey by Homer. At the end of this unit on the Odyssey we wrote a persuasive essay and we got to choose any topic on the Odyssey. I chose why Odysseus was a great leader. Odysseus made it past several monsters and many problems on his journey back to Ithaca. He lost many men and wasn't very loyal to his wife. But he made it, I dont know how many leaders would be able to stay alive and make it home, and complete his journey when facing all of the problems that he had faced. That is what I did during term 2 of my English 1 class
Romeo and Juliet
In Term 3 for my English class we have been reading Romeo and Juliet. Right now, we are on Act 2 Scene 5. We read the play out loud and everybody has a part. We also do group work to try and find the writing by Shakespeare more in depth and try to understand it. At the end of every act we watch the entire act. We try to relate it to the book and spot the differences. We always do an assignment like a venn diagram or we try to find 5 differences from the book to the movie. This is a fun unit and we can relate it to shows today like Seth McFarlane's Family Guy because of some of the jokes inside the text.
I-Search Project
In term 4 of my English 1 class, we had to create an I-Search project. In this assignment we would choose something that has to do with our lives and we would research that topic. I chose the Boston Bruins as my research topic because I have been playing hockey since I was able to walk and ever since I have loved the Boston Bruins. The Bruins are currently in the Stanley Cup finals against the Chicago Blackhawks.
